the airvase in istanbul... June 17, 2011

Torafu Architects are currently having an airvase exhibition at Haaz Art & Design Gallery in Istanbul until June 27. The exhibition displays around 200 airvases as well as a beautiful collection of photographs that tell the airvase story.

Matt and I visited the Torafu headquarters in Tokyo just a couple of weeks ago and we were lucky enough to hear all about the making of the airvase from the designers and makers themselves – amazing! We saw many mock-ups and tests, hundreds of them and some were even cut by hand! What a truly incredible experience and one we’ll never forget. I’ll blog more about it later. Lots and lots still to show and tell!

Magie Hollingworth recycles paper waste by pulping discarded materials to produce these amazing paper pieces. If you’re in or around South Yorkshire be sure to see her work, and the works of twenty other paper artists at the Paperworks exhibition at The Civic Gallery.

Hello. I’m back from Japan and I can’t wait to show you some of the amazing things and places I discovered along the way. I’ll be back to blogging as usual soon. In the meantime take a look at this new paper perfect 1930’s telephone by The Makerie. They created it to illustrate the contact page of their website. So nice!

stamp it your way... May 18, 2011

As promised (in my last post), here’s what upon a fold will be displaying at the upcoming A4 Paper Festival in Sydney. The airvase by Torafu Architects is definitely one of my all time favourite paper finds. So when asked to showcase a product that was both innovative in design and available for purchase, the airvase was first to pop into my head. It’s paper used in a way I have never seen before.

Now here comes the fun part! The white airvase, although astoundingly beautiful in white is also spectacular in colour. My idea was to demonstrate how playful they really are, so I got stamping using all my favourite colours and then shaped each airvase differently. I just carved simple shapes from erasers I already had at home (I’m sure there are more sophisticated methods), and used VersaColor pigment ink for adding colour. Simply stamp your design, leave it to dry and then sculpt it your way. There are so many possibilities!

These airvases will be on display at the festival and there will be samples for festival guests to play with too. And if you fall in love with them, as did I, there will be sets available at the show for purchase.

I’m flying out of Sydney next week and on my way to Japan which means I’m sadly going to miss this paper celebration. I’m now completely convinced that I’m cursed with bad timing. When I found out the dates for the show, I wanted to cry. Anyway, I just know there will be many more to come because this is too good a celebration to stop at one!

There has been much blogging, tweeting, and chitchat about this very exciting upcoming paper festival and I’m not at all surprised. It’s the first of its kind here in Australia, and it’s going to be amazing!

Presented by The Paper Convention Collective, the A4 Paper Festival in Sydney will showcase amazing paper art by 12 international and Australian artists. Our dear paper folding friend Yoshinobu Miyamoto from Japan will be a guest artist, along with many other inspiring paper artists, including all my Aussie favourites. So if you’re in Sydney, be sure to mark this on your calendar as there’s loads of paper fun to be had starting May 31 through to June 6. You must RSVP to attend the opening night which will be held at The Paper Mill gallery.

The event will include workshops, talks, exhibitions, demonstrations, and more. It’s the brainchild of Lisa Loxley, a passionate paper person and the creative gal behind lox+savvy paper goods.

The lead up to the main event has been non-stop activity for Lisa. I’m not quite sure how she hasn’t collapsed from exhaustion yet!? A genuine passion for paper is what has inspired her every step of the way, through workshops, markets, talks and soon a week long main event! Luckily she has awesome volunteers helping out and a long list of sponsors, venue and media partners, including yours truly.

I was so happy to have been asked to contribute to the A4 Paper Festival. Upon a Fold will be showcasing one amazing paper product, as well as fundraising for Japan. Since so many of you are not be able to attend (including me, but more about that later!) I’ll show you what we created for our display in my next post. It’s colourful and loads of fun to create, and I can’t wait to show you!

jum nakao's paper dresses... May 6, 2011

It’s Fashion Week here in Sydney, and even though I don’t know the first thing about fashion, I thought a paper fashion post would be mighty fine right about now.

Wow, aren’t these paper dresses so beautiful? I’ve been staring at them all night. It’s rare to see paper draped like that, as if it were fabric. Brazilian designer Jum Nakao has mastered the art of paper fashion. This dress collection made its debut in 2004 at Sao Paulo’s Fashion Week, in a paper themed runway performance titled Sewing the Invisible. Unbelievably at the end of the show, the models were told to tear up their dresses (yep, this brought a tear to my eye also) “as a reminder that fashion is a medium and not an end in itself”. American artist Laura Cooperman documents her travels in the most amazing way – using a scalpel, paper and pins. Her collection of hand cut paper illustrations and installations depict houses she has seen, and landscapes she has wandered.

better postage rates... April 28, 2011

postage_2
After a year of sending paper goods all over the world, Upon A Fold has now finally qualified for cheaper postage rates with Australia Post.

International postage rates have come down quite a bit, which is great, and international customers, please remember that 10% will also come off your total at checkout. This is simply an Australian tax that overseas orders do not attract.

To my dear Aussie customers, you’ll also find reduced rates for postage within Oz. Also, I’ve added weights for every product in the store. So now, you’ll know exactly how many grams you have in your basket, before passing through checkout.

Thanks for all the support so far everyone. I’ll continue to push for better rates with Australia Post, but in the meantime, if you could share the news with your friends and fellow paper lovers, I’d be eternally grateful.

Justine xo

P.S Credit to D-Bros for the beautiful airmail letter set above.

Travelling bookbinder Rachel Hazell, believes that everyone has a book inside them. Do you have a story to tell? Rachel travels far and wide (look, even Antarctica) where she discovers new tales to tell, tales that inspire her to make beautiful books and precious folded pieces. Sounds dreamy.
